Nueva Andalucía

Nueva Andalucía, by far the largest urbanization in Marbella, measuring several square kilometres in size, was the brainchild of José Banús Masdeu, who came to Marbella in 1962 and acquired the land, including what is today Puerto Banús, and immediately applied for planning permissions. The construction of Puerto Banús started in 1965 and was inaugurated in 1968 and, in this period of time, the main infrastructure of Nueva Andalucía was installed, all at once rather than in phases, which was to cost Mr. Banús dearly before the end of the decade.

Banús came from a family of builders and had achieved great success in building low income properties in Madrid and other cities in Spain. Later he was to be awarded some of the highest decorations in Spain for his work. His project in Marbella was called “crazy” and “stupid” when he announced his plans, however his vision proved absolutely on the spot, with incredible success achieved in the 70’s and the worldwide acclaim for the imagination in design and architecture of Puerto Banús. Banús was of course influenced by the success of Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe’s Marbella Club and all the celebrities coming to Marbella at the time, which was strong support for his decision to become the most important developer on the Costa del Sol then, betting squarely on the future of residential tourism in Marbella.

Panorama Properties was one of the first international agents to sell in Nueva Andalucía, and indeed in the early 70’s, sold some 120 new properties built by Banús, including apartments, townhouses and villas. Nueva Andalucía is divided into two basic areas: the eastern section, comprising the area of Las Brisas del Golf and other sectors of higher quality villas and some areas of apartments, and the western section which is separated from Las Brisas del Golf by a very high ridge and comprises less expensive properties, including the village of La Campana, la Torre de Andalucía, and small villas and townhouses stretching down to the main road. Each area is subdivided into several “Supermanzanas”, of different types of residential developments.

The eastern section, as indicated above, includes the famous Las Brisas Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones championship course par 72 inaugurated in 1968, along with a beautiful golf club and golf hotel, and the Los Naranjos Golf Course, just behind the Las Brisas Course, also designed by Trent Jones, and inaugurated in 1977, with a very popular golf club and restaurant as well.

To the east of Nueva Andalucía is the Urbanization Aloha Golf, with yet another excellent golf course, golf club and restaurant, a development of the subsidiary of the Banco de Bilbao, Inmobiliaria Bilbao – whose land was acquired at the end of the 60’s when Banús had problems paying his bank loans for his infrastructure development and the bank stepped in to take the land from him. To the west is located the La Quinta Golf course, comprising three 9-hole courses and a beautiful 5-star hotel with every imaginable service, and a high quality development of villas and townhouses surrounding the hotel, all created by the famous and incredibly successful property developer and hotel owner, Ricardo Arranz. No wonder this area is called the “Golf Valley”!

Included in Nueva Andalucía is the “Plaza de Toros”, the brick bullring, one of the most important on the Costa del Sol; the Hotel-Casino Andalucía Plaza, the Centro Plaza Shopping Centre and several smaller groups of stores, easily thirty different restaurants, and virtually every service that anyone can ask for. Puerto Banús, right across the street, has the most elegant and most popular shopping area of Marbella, including of course, the famous department store “El Corte Inglés”, a one-stop shopping centre in itself, a movie theatre and loads of shops and restaurants.
