Andalucía consolidates its leadership in European tourism demand

In 2025, more people stayed overnight in Andalucía than in other regions, and they stayed for more nights.

New data released by Eurostat confirms that tourism demand in Andalucía during 2025 was the highest in Europe. As southern Europe continued to dominate tourist accommodation bookings across the EU, Spain ranked among the leading destinations, with the southern province of Andalucía emerging as the country’s most visited region.

In this context, tourism demand refers to the number of nights spent in registered tourist accommodation, a metric that reflects real bookings and real stays rather than online searches or general interest. By this measure, Andalucía outperformed all other Spanish regions.

More on the stats

According to Eurostat, Andalucía was the most popular region in Europe for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in the second quarter of 2025, recording 13.3 million overnight stays. It was followed by Croatia’s Adriatic coast, Jadranska Hrvatska, with 9.6 million nights, and France’s Île-de-France region with 9.0 million.

The data also highlights how concentrated demand is within southern and lifestyle-led destinations. The 20 most popular tourist regions in the EU were located across just five countries, with Spain and France each accounting for six regions, Italy contributing five, Portugal two and Croatia one. This concentration reinforces the strength of established tourism hubs, with Andalucía firmly at the forefront.

Why Andalucía leads Spain

Andalucía’s position as Spain’s most visited region reflects a combination of diversity, accessibility and year-round appeal. Stretching from the Atlantic coastline to the Mediterranean, the region encompasses historic cities, natural parks, beaches and well-established coastal resorts.

Within Andalucía, the Costa del Sol plays a central role in driving visitor numbers. Excellent international air connections, a mature hospitality sector and a climate that supports year-round travel all contribute to the coast’s popularity.

In destinations such as Marbella, strong tourism demand translates into consistently high occupancy levels across a wide range of accommodation types. Many visitors return repeatedly, often extending their stays or visiting outside traditional holiday periods, distinguishing it from destinations driven primarily by one-off or short-term travel.

Beyond the tourism, a clear signal for the Costa del Sol

While the Eurostat data focuses on tourism rather than property, the implications extend beyond the hospitality sector. High volumes of tourist accommodation bookings support local economies, reinforce rental demand and often act as the bridge in longer relationships with the region.

For many international buyers, the Costa del Sol is initially discovered through travel. Over time, frequent visits and longer stays can evolve into semi-permanent living arrangements or property ownership, particularly in regions offering strong infrastructure and lifestyle stability.

In this sense, sustained tourism in Andalucía reflects more than short-term popularity. It points to long-term confidence in the region as a place to spend time, return to, and eventually invest in.
